Reflections on the Readings and the Movies

After reading chapter three I cam to the conclusion that the film industry is a very cut through industry, but I guess that we all knew that after reading the first two chapters of the book. As I was reading this chapter I thought that it was a little unfair how the United States uses other countries and movie stars from other countries to make money. For example the take over of the theaters that are not doing so well, so that they will get the money that the theatre brings in. They bring the foreign actors over here so that the foreign viewers will watch the American films with the foreign actors in them. They also provide funding for foreign films, so they can get a cut of the money. After reading the whole chapter and looking at it from the business aspect I think that the American film industry is doing exactly the right thing for the business.

I really enjoy watching all three of the Lord of the Ring movies. The fellowship of the ring is what got me hooked. I think that this was probably the most important of the tree, because it is the one that gets people hooked and leaves them wanting more. The makeup in this movie is done with perfection, and the special effects are amazing. For example when the hobbits are standing next to the average size characters they really look small, it almost makes you believe that they are real.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was a pretty good movie. It is not something that I would normally go to the movies to see, but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought that the fight scenes were really cool even though it was a little far fetched. My favorite fight scene was the one done on the tree tops. The scenery was beautiful. I liked the love story twist, but who doesn’t like a good love story. Although I was a little confused by the ending, why does she jump of the mountain? What does she wish for? Does it come true? I guess this is what makes it a little more interesting when it keeps you guessing. I can defiantly see how the reading relates to these two movies. I can see now why these movies brought in so much at the box office both here and in other countries.

Denise, I agree that the U.S. film industry has helped some foreign markets, but I do not agree with some of the tactics they have employed to do so. Improvements always incur a high cost, financial and otherwise. However, I suppose this is the “give and take, then take some more” nature of the U.S. film business. :-)

I, too, was very impressed at how the hobbits appeared so small in relation to the other characters in The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2001, Peter Jackson). Camera techniques are a marvel, and I look forward to learning more about this aspect of production.

When Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000, Ang Lee) was released, I was interested in the film. However, like many Americans, I do not usually go out of my way to see a subtitled film (and positively avoid dubbed films). Despite this, however, I really enjoyed viewing the film for this assignment. Before Jen leaped off the mountain, she asked Lo what his wish was, so at first I thought she was jumping for his sake. However, her jump was far more risky than any she had before attempted, so it is possible that she did not survive. Perhaps she was willing to take that risk because her wish was to rid herself of the evil which wreaked so much havoc in the lives of others. If this was so, then it may have meant that her wish came true, but Lo’s did not. It depends on whether she was jumping to accomplish her own wish, or Lo’s. We do not know the result, but as an audience, we wish for the most positive outcome. Maybe this is the message of the scene, but likely, it was intentially left open to interpretation.

Like you I enjoyed all three of the Lord of the rings movies. They did a great job with the make up and costumes. You do kind of feel like the hobbits are real. I agree with you about Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon having beautiful scenery. I personally liked the film I found it interesting and intriging.

This was the fisrt time that I watch any of the Lord of the Rings and like you I was hooked. Had to run out and rent the other two just to see how it ended. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had the best settings that I have seen an a lot of movies. China really is a beautiful land.

This was the first Lord of the Rings movie that I have watched. I enjoyed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but I also thought that some of the scenes were far fetched. I couldn’t figure out why it ended so abruptly. I wasn’t sure why she jumped off the mountain either.

The first lord of the rings is what got me hooked as well- I think anyone who went and saw the first one and at least watched the whole thing felt compelled to see 2 and 3.
Crouching Tiger-my take as to why she jumped goes back to asian culture- they are very honor driven and she in all her actions had dishonored her family- and there fore and to find a why to give them back their respect. Also if you rewatch the end- she has him make the wish(can’t think of his name right now) then she jumps because his wish was al she could give him.

I too was hooked with the first Lord of the Rings, yet I don’t know if it was the time in my life and what was going on then or what, but I didn’t really enjoy the second and third Lord of the Rings. They did great work in all three to make sure that the charcters looked real, meaning the hobbits vs the others. I don’t know why, I just didn’t really enjoy the latter of the trilogy.
